King David Towers
King David Towers
Nino Ghoghoberidze, Tbilisi/GE. In Transcaucasia, at the border between Europe and Asia, is the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. Lying somewhere between the East and the West, between traditional and modern, the architecture of the city is characterized by the Orthodox style, striking Art Nouveau buildings and modernistic Soviet-era constructions. Now, however, high-rise buildings also punctuate its urban skyline. In the centre of the city, the King David towers, two architecturally impressive skyscrapers, stretch skywards. The mixeduse complex houses a business centre, a hotel and restaurants, as well as high-end apartments with a spa area and swimming pool. The load-bearing structure consists of a monolithic, reinforced concrete frame with rigid joints and cores in the centre of the building due to the wind loads present and the required earthquake protection. The floor-to ceiling glazing captures the breathtaking panorama all the way up to the snowcapped peaks of the Caucasus.
