Bauhausmuseum
Bauhausmuseum
Professor Heike Hanada, laboratory of art and architecture, with Benedict Tonon and Manfred Schasler architectural practice, Berlin/DE.
100 years after it was founded, the Bauhaus school finally has its own building in the place where it was first established in Weimar. The minimalistic cube holds its own next to the bulky Gauforum, which drove out the Bauhaus school initially from Weimar and later from Germany. The entrance hall can be accessed from several sides and is the starting point for the museum. The five levels are connected to one another by means of a two storey cascading stairway. Horizontal and diagonal sightlines of the adjoining open spaces make the individual functional areas stand out. In the typical Bauhaus style, only a few materials – concrete, glass and steel – have been used in the newbuild. Only a few openings break up the façade. True to the Bauhaus tradition, the architects opted for steel profiles in the constructions, some of which are large format, such as the nine metre high entrance portal or floor-to-ceiling fire doors inside the building. The cafeteria can be opened out to the terrace by means of lift-and-slide doors.
