Design to Fabrication

The requirements placed on the building envelope will be even more varied in future. Digitalisation is an important tool for dealing with this complexity and making it useable for developments.

PROFILE: Which topics on the Schüco stand interest you in particular? Which ones are relevant for you?

Sanjeev Tankha: We need innovative ideas to tackle the current environmental challenges. Utilising ideas and technologies from other industries in the façade system in order to minimise noise pollution and still create a light and airy interior space is the right kind of innovation. The developments in acoustics are fascinating and highly relevant for our industry. Smart technology and materials are being developed outside the façade industry and we need to be ready to adapt our systems so that we can embrace these ideas and integrate them in façade systems.

PROFILE: Have the customers‘ requirements changed? What new requirements are there?

Sanjeev Tankha: Customers want to do the right thing for the environment and construct the best possible building, but it is by no means easy for them to maintain an awareness of the building budget. New technology is expensive and hence often quite slow to be adopted by the industry.

PROFILE: How is digitalisation continuing to have an impact on architecture?

Sanjeev Tankha: At Walter P Moore, we work according to a »design to fabrication« philosophy. This is the way we develop the entire design and the technical configuration of our projects. The digital platform allows us to implement a very high level of data fidelity, which can then be easily used in the fabrication and construction process when the contractors take over the project. It enables a faster iterative process of design options which can be implemented seamlessly in the subsequent design and construction stages. The digital platform allows the design team to embed fabrication intelligence in the design process so that the overall »design to fabrication« data exchange is a simple, efficient handover.
